कार्तिक कृष्णा चौथ जिसे करवा चौथ कहते हैं, उस दिन का उपवास दाम्पत्य प्रेम बढ़ाने वाला होता है क्योंकि उस दिन की गोलार्द्ध स्थिति, चन्द्रकलायें, रोहणी नक्षत्र प्रभाव एवं सूर्य मार्ग का सम्मिश्रण परिणाम शरीरगत अग्नि के साथ समन्वित होकर शरीर एवं मन की स्थिति को ऐसा उपयुक्त बना देता है, जो दाम्पत्य सुख को सुदृढ़ और चिरस्थायी बनाने में बड़ा सहायक होता है।
सुखमय दाम्पत्य की इच्छाओं और आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने में तथा बहुत से दाम्पत्य जीवन के अनिष्टों को टालने में यह व्रत उपयोगी सिद्ध होता हैं।
इस पूजन में माता पार्वती, भगवान शंकर और चन्द्रमा जी के साथ माता रोहणी की पूजा की जाती है। सुबह से निर्जला, या जलाहर या रसाहार लेकर यह पुनीत व्रत स्त्री पुरुष दोनों कर सकते हैं। कोई ठोस आहार लेना वर्जित है।
इस दिन सुखी दाम्पत्य जीवन के लिए तीन बार पूजन करना चाहिए, सुबह सुखी दाम्पत्य जीवन के लिए तीन माला गायत्री मन्त्र की, एक माला महामृत्युंजय मन्त्र की और एक माला चन्द्र गायत्री मन्त्र की करनी चाहिए और उसके बाद आरती। सुबह और दोपहर को पूजा करते समय एक ग्लास जल पूजन के पास रखें, शांति पाठ के बाद जल ग्रहण कर लें। शाम के वक़्त पति के साथ चन्द्र पूजन करें और पति के हाथों से ही जल ग्रहण करें, और पति शाम को पत्नी के हाथ से ही जल ग्रहण करें।
शाम को क़रीब 6 बजे से 8 बजे के बीच दीपयज्ञ करना चाहिए। साथ में कलश में जल भरकर रखें। पूजन में फ़ल फूल प्रसाद और जो एक थाल भोजन का अर्पित करना चाहिए। दीपयज्ञ में 24 गायत्री मन्त्र, 11 महामृत्युंजय मन्त्र और 11 चन्द्र गायत्री मन्त्र की आहुति दें, फ़िर चन्द्रोदय का इंतज़ार करें।
लगभग 8:30 से 9 बजे के बीच चन्द्र दर्शन सर्वत्र हो जाते हैं, पति पत्नी साथ में चन्द्र दर्शन करें। दोनों साथ में पांच बार गायत्री मन्त्र, 3 बार महामृत्युंजय मन्त्र, 3 बार चन्द्रमाँ का मन्त्र पढ़कर चन्द्रमा को कलश के जल से अर्घ्य देंवें। शांति पाठ करें।
ये optional है, स्टील की चलनी से चाँद को देखें और तिलक चन्दन चलनी में करें और आरती उतारें, फ़िर उसी चलनी से पति का चेहरा देंखें और उन्हें तिलक चन्दन कर आरती उतारें। यहां भाव करें क़ि हम चलनी की तरह अपने भीतर की बुराइयों को त्याग के अच्छाईयां ग्रहण करेंगे। साथ में हम पति की अच्छाइयों पर फ़ोकस करेंगे न क़ि उनकी बुराईयों पर। फ़िर पति पत्नी को मीठा खिलाकर जल पिलाएंगे। भावना करेंगे मन वचन कर्म से पत्नी के जीवन में माधुर्य और शीतलता बनी रहे ऐसा हर सम्भव प्रयास करेंगे। पत्नी पति के चरण स्पर्श करेगी और पति उसे सौभाग्य का आशीर्वाद देंगें।
फ़िर जो दीपयज्ञ के वक्त एक थाली भोजन भगवान को प्रसाद में चढ़ाया था उसी थाली में पति पत्नी एक साथ भोजन करते हैं ऐसा वैदिक विधान कहता है, इस दिन एक दूसरे का जूठा खाने से दाम्पत्य जीवन सुखमय बनता है।
गायत्री मन्त्र - ॐ भूर्भूवः स्वः तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो योनः प्रचोदयात्।
महामृत्युंजय मन्त्र- ॐ त्र्यम्बकम् यजामहे सुगन्धिम् पुष्टि वर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्।
चंद्र मन्त्र - ॐ क्षीरपुत्राय विद्महे, अमृत तत्वाय धीमहि, तन्नो चन्द्रः प्रचोदयात्।
