Be an Independent Adult
Here 1st we need to know what independent signifies here? Here You can do anything is a mere definition of Independent but in actual terms it means you can do your things own your own , you don't have to rely on others for your work.
Now being an adult you also have to fulfill the following criteria:-
According to Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, a research professor of Psychology at the Clark University in Massachusetts, specialises in emerging adulthood – that gap between late teens and mid-twenties, where people often feel a bit lost.
Part one - Thinking Independently
1. Taking responsibility for yourself
Speaking to Tech Insider, Jensen Arnett explains that this can mean a variety of things to different people, but the crux of the point is for people to take responsibility for their actions – no matter how difficult.
“It generally means accepting the consequences of your actions without expecting anyone else, particularly your parents, to protect you from those consequences.”
2. Making independent decisions
As well as taking responsibility for your actions, you need to be able to make independent decisions. Whether this is the decision to take a job or move house, being able to make these decisions independent of your parents or peers means you’re acting like an adult.
Jensen Arnett explains that this part is about finding out your identity: “The closer they get to 30, they're more likely to be able to answer these questions and figure out their place in life. It's not like these things are answered magically because they're older, but what they want to do, where they should live, finding a partner; because people are focused on these things, they find them.”
3. Financial independence
Perhaps one of the most obvious, yet difficult, of Jensen Arnett’s ‘adult criteria’ is being able to be financially independent.
Last one may be controversial but all these are the facts which an adult have to pass through .
Now let's come to the topic
There are three phases of being an independent adult :-
(A) .Think Independently
1.Accept yourself.
You cannot build a strong, independent you if you can't live with yourself. Accept your body, your personality, your opinions, your choices, your preferences, and your life story. Do not say things against yourself.
2.Believe in yourself.
If you don't believe in yourself then who else will? We are all different and have something unique to say. No one can speak the words on your lips and not everyone is going to agree with what you say which is why it's important for you to stand by who you are because at the end of the day you are all you got and if you believe in yourself that's really all that matters.
3Accept the world.
Independent people are not vain, nor do they believe the entire human race is cruel. Independent people are those who see the world, with its good and its bad, and consciously choose to be strong for themselves and others
4.Be emotionally independent.
Chances are, you depend on many people for emotional support. It may be your parents, a significant other, or good close friends. Some will move away, some will stop talking to you, and they all will eventually die. The only person that will always be with you is you.
5.Be self-motivated.
Other people do not have and will never have the same vested interest in your success. Motivation and success is a function of habit.
6.Be your own hero.
A role model can help inspire you and show you how to live your life. It's not a bad thing to find someone you deeply admire who shares your values. However, at the end of the day, it's important to think of yourself as your own role model, as a person who is capable of doing and saying anything he or she wants.
7.Accept that life is not fair.
Our parents cared for us so much that they did everything in their power to raise us in a fair and just environment. The real world does not function on that principle which is a big problem today.
8.Stop caring about what other people think.
Stop worrying about other people's judgements about your life, whether they are thinking about your clothes, your choice of career, or your choice of significant other.
9.Don't just think that you're the best; prove it to yourself
Your opinion matters the most in your own motivation, but you know when you're pulling your own weight as to your accomplishments.
10.Get your own information.
Watch and read the news and make sure you get it from a variety of sources.
Part two - Acting More Independent
1.Maintain solid friendships.
You don't have to throw away your friends to be independent. In fact, your independence is reinforced with good friends.
2.Become financially independent.
It is tempting to depend on others financially, but before you experience independence, you must be independent. Secure your finances
3.Don't settle for anything
For comfort, for ease, or to "be nice". Work hard at everything you do. Defend your opinions. And, for you girls, don't let a man feel he has to pamper you. If you're capable of doing something good, do it.
4.Leave your friends and family at home when you can.
This is a difficult step on the journey to independent living, but you must start doing things on your own.
5.Dump the bad influences in your life.
Don't break friendships unless absolutely necessary. Learn to keep a healthy distance.
6.Save money.
Save as much as reasonably possible. This will help you create an emergency fund, since life can be unpredictable at times.
7.Sign up for a bank account.
Most banks offer a checking and savings account together, in one convenient package.
8.Start on a career path.
Experiment with different careers and find the one that you enjoy most.
9.Find your passion.
Something you are devoted to, whether it is a sport, girlfriend/boyfriends, music, a band, a form of art/dance, religion. Something that you do constantly that takes up some time
10.lan your day around you.
People who are most dependent on others allow their worlds to revolve around the needs of other people or other things.
11.Thank people for helping you.
You don't have to be stubborn to be independent. If someone has really helped you out, then thank that person by giving him a sincere "thank you".
12.Avoid trends.
Just because somebody wants to pay $60 for a shirt doesn't mean you have to.
Part three - Navigating The World More Independently.
1.Learn to drive or navigate public transportation.
You'll never be fully independent if you don't learn to drive or how to get around on your own
2.Do your own research instead of asking other people for help all the time.
Make a habit of doing your own research before you call these people if you want to be more independent.
3.Learn to be handy around the house.
Learning how to fix up your own space will make you save lots of money and feel like you don't have to wait around for others to make your life better.
4.Cook for yourself.
Don't depend on Trader Joe's or the gourmet deli across the street to cook for you.
5. Learn to balance your budget.
Whatever is going on, you should understand how much money you have to spend every month or week
6.Don't depend on your GPS for directions.
Sure, turning on your GPS or the map on your smartphone can help you get from one place to another.
7.Get used to doing things alone.
If you're truly independent, then you won't need a buddy to accomplish every little task or to do any fun activity.
8.Take it slowly.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and no one is completely independent.

All Best Career Guide
by Capt Shekhar Gupta and Shina Kalra | 1 January 2019
