Angered with Baba Ramdev, the Indian Medical Association has sent a legal notice to Yoga Guru Ramdev for his alleged statements against allopathy. While the Indian Medical Association (IMA) urged the Union health ministry to take action against Ramdev, Patanjali denied its allegation that the latter insulted allopathy and said he was reading a “forwarded WhatsApp message”. On Sunday, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan wrote to Ramdev, saying his statement was an insult to doctors working on Covid frontlines and asked him to withdraw it.
Patanjali also stoked a controversy last year when it began selling a bouquet of Ayurved medicines, labelled Coronil, as a cure for Covid-19. Important to note here that a cure for Covid-19 has yet to be found.
The drug subsequently drew ire from the government because Patanjali had not submitted the requisite clinical trial data to prove its efficacy as a cure, and had marketed the product as such without a licence for the same. Coronil has since been repackaged as a Covid supportive treatment and immunity booster.
The IMA has warned that if ministers are not acting spontaneously, the common man will be forced to resort to democratic means of struggle to proclaim the truth and knock the doors of the judiciary to get justice.
The IMA was critical of Ramdev Baba's recent video circulating on social media, "Allopathy is an isistupid and Diwali science." The Economic Times reported on Monday that an adverse test report by the Central Food Lab has prompted CSD to suspend the sale of Amla juice from Patanjali. CSD in a letter on 3 April 2017 asked all depots to make debit notes for their existing stock so that Amla juice can be sent back to Patanjali. It was the same lab where Maggi noodles found high levels of lead and MSG and forced Nestle to withdraw the product from the Indian market. This helped Ramdev launch its noodle and pasta products, which entered the packaged food category. However, Nestle managed to get Maggie back on the market after a long legal battle. The Rs 5,000-crore Ayurveda company, Patanjali Ayurved, was first drawn by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to sell noodles and pasta without the required license, even though the packet of Patanjali flour noodles displayed "FSSAI license number" . Indian Express reported that as per information available with FSSAI's Food Licensing and Registration System, a license has been issued to Patanjali Ayurved Limited, Patanjali Food and Herbal Park to manufacture a wide range of products, including noodles.
However, Baba Ramdev denied all the allegations and said that he had all the permissions.
The FSSAI sought clarification as to how the company could sell the flour noodles brand without obtaining mandatory approval. While Patanjali cited his license to make pasta, Ramdev had said that there was "some confusion" that would be resolved. The company also faced criticism from the FSSAI for allegedly misleading advertisements for its edible-oil products.
